Arrochar is located at the northernmost point of the network of lochs that run north from the Clyde Estuary, at the head of Loch Long. Climbers looking to tackle the nearby mountains of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, including the popular Ben Arthur (also known as the Cobbler), have made this area their base of operations. Located about a mile and a half west of Tarbet on the shores of Loch Lomond, Arrochar is home to a wide variety of retail establishments, dining options, and watering holes. The two communities also share a train station near the valley’s highest point. Activities abound in Loch Lomond, Britain’s largest expanse of inland water. Take a leisurely stroll through Balloch Castle Country Park or Queen Elizabeth Forest Park and you’ll be led past picturesque lochside villages and sandy bays; alternatively, the mountains provide strenuous walks and climbs for the more adventurous traveler. Helensburgh, a nearby town with wide streets, is perfect for a day trip with the kids.
