From its three grand manors and its old water mill, which made bread until the 1920s, the picturesque, ancient village of Shalfleet has many references in the doomsday book. Because of its deep and sheltered harbour, salt beds, and productive shellfish beds, the nearby mediaeval town of Newtown was declared a “Free Town” in 1256. The only National Nature Reserve on the island, Newtown is a great place for history buffs, hikers, animal lovers, and anyone looking to relax in a stunning natural setting. It is possible to go on an estuary safari from Shalfleet Manor all the way to the Newtown estuary, where you can see a wide variety of birds, plants, and other wildlife. Shalfleet also has a farm shop, village stores, and an off-licence in addition to its award-winning gastro pub and off-licence. Definitely a top-notch holiday destination.
