Kirkcolm, formerly known as Stewarton, was founded in the early 17th century. The village has a nice pub and a playground. Beautiful coastal walks offer excellent birdwatching. Stranraer, a ferry port at the head of Loch Ryan, is 6 miles away. Stranraer is the gateway to the Rhins of Galloway Peninsula, and its main attraction is the ruined Castle of St John. Old town hall houses Stranraer Museum.
Three miles east of Stranraer is Castle Kennedy Gardens, with a castle, two lochs, a giant lily pond, and monkey puzzle trees. Portpatrick, 11 miles away, has pubs and restaurants.
