Rhayader is a tiny Welsh market town featuring tea rooms, taverns, restaurants, and antique retailers. A huge pool and weekly cattle market are further bonuses. The Red Kite Feeding Station is a must-see attraction. Rhayader is the first town on the River Wye and has stunning dams and lakes. The Elan Valley includes hikes and cycle trails (cycle rental is available in Rhayader), as well as a visitor’s centre with a café and playground. This area, with its many nature reserves, is called the Wildlife Centre of Wales. Pony riding is available. Builth Wells hosts the Spring Festival, Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, and Winter Fair. Or, drive 34 miles to the Welsh shore.
