Bishop’s Waltham, a lovely little medieval market town is nestled at the source of the River Hamble, right on the edge of South Downs National Park. The town enjoys plenty of pleasantries with traditional shopping, pub lunches and a visit to the remains of Bishop’s Waltham Palace. This historical palace was destroyed in 1644 but there are still extensive ruins which are worth a look. You can stock up on essentials at the butchers, bakers, greengrocers or fishmongers – and with two pubs and various eateries, there’s no shortage of places to dine. The town is also ideally located a short drive from historic Winchester, as well as Southampton and Portsmouth which will offer plenty of coastal activities at their sandy beaches. Heading into the nearby National Park, you will find a host of great walks and sights at places like Old Winchester Hill, Beacon Hill National Nature Reserve and Little Hyden Woods.
