Located in the Cairngorms National Park, Crathie is at the heart of Royal Deeside. Crathie is a favourite Scottish retreat of the Royal Family when they stay at Balmoral Castle less than a mile away, attending church services in the village when they are in residence. Queen Victoria’s personal servant, John Brown, is buried in the graveyard in Crathie Church. From March to August of each year, Balmoral Castle and gardens are open to the public. The village of Crathie is one of the destinations on the Castle Trail, not only because of Balmoral but because of its close proximity to Abergeldie Castle. The Cairngorms National Park contains spectacular scenery, offering many opportunities for leisure activities and walks. The abundance of wildlife makes it a true paradise for naturalists and birdwatchers. Nearby Braemar Golf Club is the highest 18-hole course in Scotland, and is split in two by the River Clunie making it a sight to see even if you don’t want to tee off. Also unmissable is a visit to the Royal Lochnagar Distillery on the southern bank of the Dee.
