Among the best-known tourist destinations in the North York Moors National Park, Helmsley is a well-preserved town with a large market square and a variety of lodging options. English Heritage’s Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard are within a few miles of Helmsley, which has a 12th-century castle of its own. For those looking to enjoy the sun, Helmsley has an outdoor pool that is open during the summer months. The Cleveland Way begins in Helmsley, as well as the nearby North York Moors with their hidden dales and villages which are lovely to walk through at any time of year. Scarborough, Whitby, and the East Coast are all within a scenic drive, as is York, while Pickering and the start of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a famous steam railway, are slightly closer.
