The historic village of Canonbie lies just over the border into Scotland, close to the town of Gretna. Canonbie lies on the River Esk, renowned for its salmon and sea trout fishing, and is celebrated in Walter Scott’s poem Marmion, chronicling the exploits of young Lochinvar. This is the heart of The Debatable Lands, the large area of border country that was once controlled by neither the Scots or English, and was a popular refuge for outlaws. The area offers a quiet and relaxing atmosphere with attractive coastal landscapes, rural walking and fishing.
