Barnard Castle, a market town in County Durham, is located in the pristine scenery of Teesdale. It is situated where a former Roman fort once stood and over a river. The castle’s ancient ruins still rise over the river and are worth a visit. The town, lovingly referred to as “Barney” by locals and visitors alike, is home to cobblestone streets, yards, and back lanes that date back to the 12th century. The neighbouring Bowes Museum is a superb place to spend the day exploring this lovely building and taking in the fascinating exhibitions. This charming market town is located in a region that is ideal for hiking and biking. The Lake District, the Pennine and Teesdale Ways, the River Tees, and the stunning waterfalls at High Force are all close by.
