The traditional Welsh village of Tanygrisiau, meaning “below the steps” is situated within reach of Blaenau Ffestiniog. The village stands amongst dramatic scenery, and Tanygrisiau is a good starting point for many walks, especially if your intention is to climb Moelwyn itself. Tanygrisiau railway station is on the famous Ffestiniog Railway, a narrow gauge railway built to carry slate from the mines down to the sea at Porthmadog; today it is a renowned tourist attraction providing stunning views on its trip to the coast.
