Appleby-in-Westmorland is a small town on the banks of the River Eden, with the North Pennines and the Lake District Fells in the distance. Set in the lush Eden Valley, this historic town was once the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is nestled between the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, so visitors can enjoy contrasting scenery, walking and cycling, and a fantastic leisure centre. Appleby’s shops, cafes, and delicatessens sell locally made food and crafts. Boroughgate, with its interesting old buildings, connects the well-preserved Norman Castle to the fine mediaeval Church of St. Lawrence. Appleby is a major stop on the Settle-Carlisle Railway, one of the most beautiful in Britain. Many old steam trains still travel this line and over the Ribblehead viaduct. This holiday destination is near Ullswater and the Lake District.
