Richmond, the old market town at the gateway to Swaledale, sits on a conspicuous hilltop position to the north of the River Swale. Its cobblestone streets and small lanes, known as ‘wynds,’ preserve nearly nine centuries of active history and distinct character. Today, there are beautiful walks to enjoy, such as the Castle Walk, which is a magnificent terrace stroll beneath the castle walls, or alternatively, walk across the River Swale, which has parks, safe paddling spots, and little waterfalls to enjoy.
