Wells, England’s smallest city, is named after the springs which still bubble up today in the grounds of its beautiful 12th century cathedral. Close by, Vicars Close is home to the oldest complete medieval street in Europe, and the quaint market square offers an array of interesting shops, boutiques and restaurants, and a colourful twice weekly market. The surrounding Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provides a wealth of scenic footpaths and rugged landscapes, a superb centre for caving and rock climbing, and nearby Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves.
