Littledean is a historic Forest of Dean village with many ancient buildings and Roman fortifications evident on the hillside east of the village. It has a shop, Post Office and two pubs, while nearby Newnham-on-Severn offers picturesque riverside walks, a good selection of shops and traditional inns within well-preserved Georgian buildings. The Royal Forest of Dean, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and England’s largest oak forest, offers cycling, horse riding and numerous lovely walks, as well as caving, abseiling and a high wire rope course for the adventurous. Victorian docklands, Roman foundations and a Norman Cathedral can be found at the riverfront city of Gloucester, while the market town of Ross-on-Wye has excellent shops, pubs and restaurants, plus many black and white timbered buildings, and is close by as is the River Severn Estuary, known for it’s abundance of wildlife.
