Cockermouth, a little country market town in the calm north-western region of the Lake District, is only 13 miles from Keswick and is mainly unexplored and pristine. Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a major visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust, and is the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame). Cockermouth has a nice selection of stores, pubs, and restaurants, but the area’s major draw is the stunning landscape and superb walking opportunities in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water, and Derwent Water.
