With a name that means ‘abbey in the long valley’, Abbeycwmhir is a peaceful, historic village situated amidst the Radnorshire Hills, Set on Glyndwr’s Way, the area is an exceptional location for walkers and ramblers, whilst the village itself is home to the of a Cistercian Abbey, built in 1143. The Hall – also close by – is an impressive country mansion with gardens, which is open to the public. There are wonderful walking and cycling opportunities close to the village, as well as numerous trails and which incorporate the local woodland and rivers. The Cambrian Mountains and the spectacular Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons) are also close by and offer slightly more challenging terrain. Visitors can enjoy a trip to Llandrindod Wells, Rhayader or Builth Wells, all of which boast a variety of shops, museums, craft centres, pubs, tea-rooms and restaurants. The Red Kite Feeding Station at Rhayader is within easy driving distance and offers a fantastic opportunity to see these rare birds at close range.
