Although it is no longer an island, the village of Isle of Whithorn still retains the name as a link to its historic past. The village lies by the harbour on the southern tip of the Machars Peninsula, and the area has been designated as an outstanding conservation area. The village has a rich history, and trading from the port dates back to Viking times and there are the remains of a 13th Century chapel at the end of the harbour.
