With its cobblestone streets and back lanes, the picturesque and peaceful seaside village of Staithes is somewhat of an artist’s dream. Its charming buildings and cottages are grouped around the historic harbour, which is flanked on three sides by high jagged cliffs, with a secluded sandy beach nestled among the rocky shoreline. Captain Cook, who was apprenticed to a draper near the waterfront, has ties to the community. Staithes is now a must-see for anybody visiting the Yorkshire Coast, with a diverse range of pubs, shops, and tea places. Staithes still has an RNLI lifeboat station, as well as a small fleet of cobles (fishing boats) that land fish, crab, and lobster, as well as boat trips for birdwatching, fishing, and even whale watching.
