The attractive and peaceful Dales village of Barton is situated in lovely rolling countryside, just a few miles to the north of the popular market town of Richmond. Barton has a lovely village green, a stream winding its way through the village, a pub, a shop and a Post Office. Nearby Piercebridge is renowned for its Roman heritage, which dates back to around 70 AD. The Piercebridge Roman Fort Site, a recognised ancient monument, forms part of the region’s Dere Street Roman Trail, a celebration of the rich Roman heritage still to be enjoyed in the area. Forming part of the Teesdale Way, and within easy reach of the Cleveland Way, this walker’s paradise provides an excellent base to explore this delightful Dales area including nearby Swaledale and Weardale, with many bridleways, footpaths, cycle trails and lovely riverside walks available. Local attractions include the magnificent Raby Castle in nearby Staindrop, the Bowes Museum, York’s National Railway Museum, Durham Cathedral and of course the delightful market town of Barnard Castle. Nearby Richmond grew up around its castle set high above the River Swale, with panoramic river views. Within Richmond, narrow streets and alleys radiate from the cobbled market place (which has a weekly market and monthly farmers’ market) and there are numerous shops, pubs and restaurants to enjoy. The Georgian Theatre is one of the oldest surviving theatres in the country with visitors enjoying its regular productions all year round. An ideal location for exploring all of Swaledale, Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales.
