The cathedral city of Hereford lies on the banks of the River Wye and dates back to Saxon times, with its medieval bridge that runs across the river providing the very image of picturesque England. With an eclectic mix of architecture, which can be traced back to almost every British era, Hereford is a popular base for those seeking to explore the locale. Ideally placed for accessing the Black and White villages of the region, not to mention the delights of neighbouring Shropshire, Worcestershire and the Cotswolds. Famous for its cider-production, Hereford is also the home of the Mappa Mundi, the largest and most elaborate pre-15th century map in existence, which resides in the cathedral alongside the famous Chained Library; a collection of over 1500 rare books from as early as the 8th century.
