Stonebridge Meadows, managed by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, is a Local Nature Reserve situated in the Sowe Valley on the southern edge of Coventry. Alongside neighbouring reserves, Stoke Floods and Wyken Slough, it forms an important part of the valley’s Green Corridor.
Lying next to the River Sowe, the site has a diverse range of habitats including acidic grassland that’s rare to find in Warwickshire, pasture that has been continuously grazed for over 150 years, areas of marsh, and wet woodland dominated by alder trees, originally planted in the 1850s for use in the local clog-making industry.
In summer, the dense hawthorn, gorse, and broom along the western edge of the reserve provide ideal habitat for songbirds such as stonechats, linnets, yellowhammers, and dunnocks. During winter, redwings and fieldfares arrive to feast on the berry-laden shrubs, while waders like snipe, lapwing, and golden plover are attracted to the damp meadows.
In the woodland, visitors may spot nuthatches, wrens, goldcrests, and great spotted woodpeckers. Buzzards are also commonly seen circling overhead, scanning the ground for prey.
Informal paths meander through the reserve, but they can become wet and muddy, particularly after heavy or prolonged rainfall, and the woodland near the river is prone to flooding. The site is currently not accessible via the Sowe Valley Footpath.
Please note, well-behaved dogs are welcome on the reserve, but must be kept under effective control.
