Set beneath hills and wild moorland at the edge of the Pennines, the area around Littleborough is dissected by tranquil waterways and lakes where you can explore some of the North West’s finest countryside. Sweeping hillsides and rolling hills are right on the doorstep with the village also offering coffee shops, restaurants and unique independent retailers. Littleborough Farmers’ Market and Craft Fair is worth a visit and is held on the second Sunday of every month. Hollingworth Lake and Country Park is just outside the village and visitors can enjoy many outdoor attractions and an excellent visitor centre. Spanning 118 acres with the dramatic backdrop of Blackstone Edge, the lake is one of the most popular days out in the area. With boating, a nature reserve, trails, events, guided walks, community arts, environmental exhibitions, play and picnic areas it is the perfect day out for all the family. The water activity centre caters for groups and individuals wanting instruction in windsurfing, dinghy sailing and other water-based sports, and also arranges training for groups in mountain biking and climbing. The lake is also a base for a sailing club and a rowing club. The Country Park has plenty of walking routes, from easy strolls around the lake shore to sturdier treks in the surrounding hills. Littleborough is ideally situated to visit the Yorkshire Dales and the northern Peak District as well as being within easy reach of the vibrant cities of Manchester and Leeds, both of which can be reached via the train station at Littleborough. With its beautiful preserved stone buildings, Littleborough and nearby Hollingworth Lake and Country Park are well worth a visit.
