The smallest city in the UK, Wells is a fascinating historic centre surrounded by beautiful countryside. Its spectacular Cathedral was built over the space of three hundred years and has been described as ‘the most poetic of the English Cathedrals’. Adjoining the Cathedral is Vicars Close, home to the oldest complete medieval street in Europe, and the quaint market square offers an array of interesting shops, boutiques and restaurants, and a colourful twice-weekly market. The moated Bishop’s Palace is another popular heritage site, it has been home to the Bishop’s of Wells and Bath for over 800 years and boasts 14 acres of beautiful gardens. Nearby are the popular attractions of Wookey Hole Caves and Cheddar Gorge, both offering great family days out. The beautiful city of Bath, with its Roman Baths, Thermae Bath Spa, The Theatre Royal and wonderful shops, is under 30 miles away, as is the vibrant city of Bristol, which boasts a multitude of attractions, including The Zoo, Theatres, the Aquarium, the Arnol Fini Art Gallery and many more. All in all, this beautiful city makes a convenient and ideal base for touring this area. With so much to see and do, there is something to keep everyone entertained!
