This small village lies on the eastern edge of Plymouth, boasting a church, selection of pubs and organic farm shops. Attractions nearby include Thorn House and Garden, Mothecombe beach, if you want to bathe without the crowds and Plympton Castle, built in the 12th century. Interestingly, Yealmpton is home to Mother Hubbard’s Cottage from the nursery rhyme, formerly the home of the housekeeper at Kitley House, who was the muse for the story. Dartmoor Zoological Park is easily reached, as is Wembury Beach and Saltram country house, an outstandingly beautiful, Georgian mansion in Plymouth. Brixton is another popular village nearby, with a shop, Post Office, friendly, real ale pub and Just Williams restaurant, as well as plenty of countryside walks. Dartmoor National Park is to the north promising open moorlands and deep river valleys, while the vibrant city of Plymouth has an aquarium, theatre, gin distillery and so much more. Consider a coastal break in the lovely town of Yealmpton.
