Managed by Devon Wildlife Trust, Blackadon is a mile-long, narrow nature reserve situated on the western side of the steep River Webburn valley. Most of the reserve is made up of ancient woodland known as Town Wood, while to the north lies Blackadon Down, an area of bracken-covered moorland topped by a tor offering excellent views across the valley.
Along the banks of the fast-flowing river, look out for grey wagtails and dippers, while ducks such as mandarin and teal are occasionally seen swimming in the calmer stretches. The woodland supports a variety of birdlife, including lesser spotted woodpeckers, pied flycatchers, wood warblers, and redstarts, flitting through the dense canopy or nesting in the boxes provided by the Trust. In winter, you might even flush a woodcock from the undergrowth, its sudden flight startling from the ground.
On the moor, amongst the gorse, hawthorn, and blackthorn scrub, listen and look for linnets, stonechats, and yellowhammers. The moorland is also home to several species of fritillary butterflies. In winter, flocks of redwings and fieldfares arrive to feast on the berries of rowan trees scattered across the landscape.
There are no marked paths through the woodland, and a full walk through the reserve will take around two hours. The terrain can be rough and steep in places and is often slippery after rain. On the moor, there are several informal paths, and be aware that livestock graze the area. Near the tor, a bench and viewing point offer a perfect spot to rest and take in the scenery.
There is no dedicated parking at the reserve. To manage visitor numbers, many small pull-ins and informal parking areas nearby have been blocked off, particularly during the holiday season. Visitors are advised to use one of the main car parks, such as the one at Dartmeet, and walk to the reserve.
Please note, well-behaved dogs are welcome on the reserve, but must be kept on a lead at all times.
