Nightjar

Dorset, with its stunning coastline, vast heathlands, and rich wetlands, is a haven for birdwatchers. The county’s diverse habitats provide excellent opportunities to observe a wide variety of bird species throughout the year. Whether you are a seasoned birder or a casual observer, Dorset offers some of the best birdwatching locations in the UK.

Bird watching hotspots in Dorset

RSPB Arne

Situated on the shores of Poole Harbour, RSPB Arne is one of the most renowned birdwatching sites in Dorset. The reserve’s heathlands, woodlands, and mudflats attract a variety of species, including spoonbills, Dartford warblers, and nightjars. In winter, large flocks of avocets and black-tailed godwits can be seen feeding in the estuary.

Portland Bill

A key migration hotspot, Portland Bill is famous for its seabird passage and migrant species. During the spring and autumn migration, visitors can spot wheatears, flycatchers, and warblers. Seawatchers may also catch glimpses of passing skuas, shearwaters, and gannets offshore.

Radipole Lake

Located in the heart of Weymouth, RSPB Radipole Lake is an urban wetland that supports an array of birdlife. The site is excellent for spotting bearded tits, Cetti’s warblers, and bitterns. Winter visitors can enjoy sightings of marsh harriers and a variety of wildfowl.
