On the 2nd October the Audubon Society and Runstreet are hosting a 5k fun run through the streets of New York. The Audubon Murals Art Run will take participants on a journey to see the amazing Audubon Mural Project art in Harlem.
In 2014, Avi Gitler, a Manhattan art dealer, opened his gallery, Gitler & _____ in the Hamilton Heights neighbourhood in West Harlem. Not long after, he commissioned Boy Kong, a Florida street artist to paint a mural on one of the roll-down shutters on his block and the artist happened to choose a flamingo, to bring a taste of Florida to New York City.
Gitler was so taken with the artwork, that he decided to reference the neighbourhood’s history by creating a series of birds based on John James Audubon’s The Birds of America. Audubon, famous for his life-size ornithological illustrations, purchased an estate near the area in 1841 where he continued to paint till he died.
