Cramside Wood is an area of ancient ash woodland in the Wye Valley. Overlooking the River Wye, it was bought by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust from the Cressbrook & Litton Flyfishers Club in 2008.
Ash and yew trees grow on the steep daleside slopes and, in spring, provide sheltered cover for a variety of springtime flowers such as lily of the valley, bluebells, and sanicle.
The woodland also supports a range of birds, including nuthatches, chiffchaffs, jays, marsh tits, spotted flycatchers, and great spotted woodpeckers. Birds of prey like buzzards and sparrowhawks are often seen hunting overhead, while in winter, pheasants, redwings, fieldfares, and flocks of long-tailed tits are regular visitors.
Along the river, you may see wildfowl such as mallards, little grebes, teals, and mute swans. The riverbanks are also a great place to spot dippers, grey wagtails, and the occasional flash of a kingfisher.
A riverside path, suitable for those with limited mobility, runs alongside the reserve and offers excellent views of the woodland and wildlife. Public car parks are available nearby at Miller’s Dale and Tideswell Dale.
Please note, dogs are welcome on the reserve, but must be kept on a lead at all times.
