About

Stoke Floods is a wetland nature reserve centred around a large pool formed by subsidence from the former Binley coal works. Now managed by the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, it is Coventry’s second-largest body of water and a haven for wildlife. The reserve attracts a wide variety of bird species and supports an impressive array of invertebrates, including over 240 species of beetles.

The banks of the pool are lined with willow, reeds, bulrushes, and canary grass, creating the perfect habitat for reed warblers, bearded tits, and the elusive water rail. Spring brings breeding great crested grebes and moorhens, while winter sees the arrival of migratory waterfowl, including tufted ducks, shovelers, and snipes. The pool is also home to thriving populations of carp and tench, though fishing is prohibited.

To the east and west of the pool lies grassland teeming with wildflowers such as meadowsweet, great willowherb, and meadow crane’s-bill. These meadows attract summer visitors like chiffchaffs and blackcaps. To the north, a woodland dominated by sycamore and horse chestnut provides shelter for goldcrests, song thrushes, bullfinches, blackcaps, and flocks of tits.

Although there are no marked trails, the ground is mostly flat, making it relatively accessible. However, areas near the pool can become swampy, and parts of the reserve are prone to flooding in winter.

Parking is available on the nearby housing estate, but visitors are reminded to park considerately, and avoid blocking driveways and footpaths.

Please note, dogs are welcome on the reserve, but must be kept under effective control at all times.
