Bucklebury Common Nature Reserve

Bucklebury Common nature reserve, privately owned by Bucklebury Estate, is managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust. Spanning approximately 900 acres, the Common has ancient oak, ash, and beech woodland interspersed with younger birch, heathland, several ponds, and the historic Avenue of Oaks at Chapel Row. The inner row of oaks, planted in the late 16th century, commemorates a visit by Queen Elizabeth I, while the outer row was added in 1815 to celebrate Wellington’s victory at Waterloo. New trees have been planted over time to preserve this iconic landmark.

Historically, the Common was used by commoners for grazing cattle and sheep, with these rights overseen by the Court Baron and Court Leet of the Manor. Today, commoners retain the right to collect fallen deadwood for fence repairs and fires, but chainsaws are not permitted, and all timber remains the property of the Estate.

Following World War II, invasive species began to dominate much of the heathland. Restoration efforts are now focused on removing bracken, birch, and pine to revive the original heathland vegetation.

The heathland is a haven for birdlife, with species like garden warblers, tree pipits, stonechats, and woodlarks present during the summer. At dusk, visitors may hear or spot tawny owls, nightjars, and woodcocks. The woodland areas are equally rich, supporting birds such as blackcaps, green woodpeckers, goldcrests, and jays.

Public access is available for walkers, horse riders, and cyclists, with an extensive network of rights of way crisscrossing the reserve. While the paths are mostly flat, they can be uneven and muddy after rain, so visitors are advised to take care.

There is a small car park near the Common on Briff Lane with several other car parks located nearby.

Please note, dogs are welcome on the reserve but must be kept on a lead at all times. During breeding season from the 1st March to the 31st July please keep dogs on the paths to prevent them from disturbing ground nesting birds.
