The Meaning Of Birds In Dreams

The Meaning Of Birds In Dreams

While science has not yet fully explained why we dream, most experts believe that dreams help us consolidate and process memories, rehearse potential situations we may encounter, and work through challenges in our waking lives.

Dreams typically occur during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, when our brain activity is nearly as high as when we are awake. Although we likely dream every night, we often forget them quickly upon waking, unless we are roused during or shortly after a dream. Dreams can be about all sorts of things and often take on surreal qualities, likely linked to dopamine production in the brain.

Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, was the first to formally introduce the idea of dream interpretation and the theory of the unconscious in his 1899 book *The Interpretation of Dreams*. However, humans have likely sought to understand the meaning of dreams for millennia, long before modern science provided us with a clearer understanding of the world and how it works.

Birds have held symbolic significance across many cultures and civilizations, often interpreted through superstitions, spiritual beliefs, and proverbs. Dreams about birds are no exception and can carry a range of meanings, depending on the context and where you are in life.

Dreaming about a bird in your hand

Goldcrest In The Hand

If you’ve dreamt about a bird that flies into your hand good luck may be coming your way. Look out for opportunities, both personal and professional, and make sure you grab on to them with both hands.

Dreaming of catching a bird can also mean you may be due a lottery win, your business is about to have a turn for the good, or someone is going to bequeath you a large inheritance.

Dreaming about a flying bird

Flying Bird

Dreaming about flying birds are usually positive signs. A flying bird represents freedom, and reflects your independence and strength. It may be that your subconscious is trying to break out of a regulated environment, or it may be telling you to concentrate on achieving your goals and not worry about the small things that are holding you back.

Dreaming about a flock of birds

Flock Of Birds

There are several interpretations to dreaming about a flock of birds. It may mean that you are feeling liberated and surrounded with good things, or it may suggest that you’re feeling overwhelmed with whatever life is throwing you at the moment. Think about your current situation and use the symbolism in your dream to help you work through any anxieties or problems you need to solve.

Dreaming about birds singing

Singing Robin

If you’ve been dreaming about singing birds, then you may be feeling a little lonely. The dream reinforces your need to be a sociable person, or you may be in need of some love. If you’re coupled up, a dream about singing birds may show that your relationship isn’t going well, or you may have even been tempted to look elsewhere for some excitement.

Go through the details in the dream to help you evaluate your life and decide whether you need to make some changes to be truly fulfilled.

Dreaming about a big bird

Ostriches

Dreaming about big birds is often seen as a positive sign, symbolising freedom, untapped potential, and new opportunities. It can represent ambition, inspiration, and a desire for adventure. For a woman, such a dream may also be interpreted as a sign of an upcoming marriage.

However, big birds in dreams can sometimes carry a different meaning. They may indicate challenges or obstacles that need to be overcome, or suggest that you are facing an overwhelming situation that requires careful thought and navigation.

Dreaming about a bird in a cage

Bird In A Cage

Although birds are usually interpreted as good omens, a bird in cage is more likely to symbolise a negative experience. A dream about a caged bird can be interpreted as feelings of hopelessness or uncertainty about a situation, particular if the bird remains caged throughout the dream. If the caged bird is surrounded by other birds outside of the cage, it may mean that you feel judged by friends, family, or work colleagues, or you are not able to present your true self to the world.

If the bird escapes, this can be a good sign meaning you are going to be able to get yourself out of a tricky situation.

Dreaming about a dead or injured bird

Sick Blackbird

A dream about an injured bird represents your weakness and vulnerability. You may be worried about what other people think of you and so are unable to express your true thoughts and opinions. Similarly, dreaming about a dead bird can mean you’re anxious about certain situations in your waking life, such as a loss or change in circumstance.

However, a dead bird can also symbolise new beginnings, with the bird’s death representing the end of a negative phase in your life, and the start of a new chapter such as a promotion, new relationship, or opportunity to travel.

Dreaming about feeding birds

Feeding Parakeets

Feeding birds in a dream is a good sign. It can be seen to represent a full life in which loved ones provide plenty of support and encouragement to get you through difficult situations.

Feeding birds in a dream is also associated with prosperity, and sharing with others your good fortune.

Dreaming about colourful birds

Rainbow Lorikeets

Dreaming about colourful birds is often associated with positivity, joy, and new opportunities. The vibrant colours can symbolise creativity, self-expression, and emotional fulfilment. Such dreams may suggest a period of personal growth, happiness, or even exciting changes on the horizon.

Different colours in the birds may carry specific meanings:

Blue birds – Peace, wisdom, and spiritual awakening.
Red birds – Passion, energy, or strong emotions.
Green birds – Prosperity, health, and personal growth.
Yellow birds – Optimism, joy, and enlightenment.
Multi-coloured birds – A blend of different emotions, diversity, and new experiences.

  1. Today I dreamt that I was catching birds of various kinds, a sparrow, a blackbird, a magpie… I didn’t force them to, I offered them my hand and they jumped on it and I put them all in the same cage. I wanted to take care of them, give them a bigger cage and train them to free fly during the day and then come back to me. Later, I came to the house where supposedly I was staying and found out the cage was emptied by some toddler. At first I was worried it hurt the birds but it just let them go. The last bird I caught was the blackbird and I let it sat somewhere in the back, apparently it was patient to wait for me. But when this happened, all I remember was incredible sadness, I kept crying “My birds! My birdies!” And hoping they would come back to me. There was also a voice of a woman and suddenly a lot of bees around (or some kind of an insect), and the voice told me I need to perform some ritual or what. I told her no, I’m not going to perform any ritual, I just want my birds back. As I was waking up, I started realising at the back of my mind that keeping wild birds caged would be cruel, but throughout the dream, I just wanted to take care of them and I meant well. I do faintly remember some of those birds were injured so I saved them. What I remember the most is the incredible feeling of sadness and longing for them to come back as I was waking up.

  2. I dreamt that a bird, a big bird clung unto me so that I tried to pull it off me but it wouldn’t let but the thing is I was patient with the bird so I let it stay for a long while before I tried again to pull it off me but it clung it’s feet to my arm and armpit and refused to release me.

  3. I dreamed I found a bird on the fence I catch it because it was so beautiful and the bird gave birth to eight chicks without laying eggs I put them in a cage and three out of the chicks we’re dead.

  4. I dreamed i got a bird pregnant and the when i tried to hold the other bird the baby was like inside the mama like a kangaroo and the the baby had bite me and i was mad then i went with my family and drove to pick up siblings.

  5. I dreamt I had a cage of birds 6 or 7 I remember counting 6 little birds in my dream. 2 were blue 2 were grey 2 were white like pairs parakeets. Then there was a bigger bird like a cockatiel. I had them in a small cage in a barn and opened the door on the cage and left when I came back to gather them I put them back in the cage I thought one flew a way but I counted 6 in the house once I took them inside. the birds kept finding a way to push the door open. One at first and I tried to stop it but it didn’t work I come back later and all the parakeets were gone I tried to gather them back up but for some reason the family found them in drains but it was too late. The cockatiel stayed in the cage the other funny thing was the family, I feel was mine, but they were mixed and they were getting ready for bed. It was strange but it was a long detailed dream usually I dream and it’s not so detailed. This dream had a beginning a middle and a end It was strange.

  6. I had a dream, me, my brother and my mom driving in a row road in the middle of the paddy field. Yellow Color small bird giving birth to baby birds on the row road. There’s no eggs, it gives birth like humans. And right after they born, they flew. When they were flying yellow feathers shows radiant yellow with the sun set.

  7. Ok I first dreamt a about bird or birds flew into my room I was very scared and somehow got them out of the room. Then another bird flew in my room and for a second I was scared. But I saw it was a beautiful bird red and blue. I wasn’t sure to shoooo it away or let it stay. Then I woke up. I woke up at peace and not fearful. What could this mean?

  8. I had a dream that I found a fledging who was being pursued by a bigger bird and the momma bird was trying to protect the fledgling. SO i picked it up but the bigger bird wouldn’t leave and I noticed there was another baby bird which had already been picked on a bit and then I noticed the nest which had a baby bird who was just hatching so I sacrificed the one that was injured and fed it to the larger bird to save the other two and to help the momma bird. then while holding the smaller bird a BIG bird like an Eagle flew over and I was just mesmerized by its Beauty. There’s a lot going on in my life right now, so I guess each representation could be reflecting a different feeling in each situation that I’m experiencing.

    1. when I was a teenager I dreamt of me standing on a mountain & a Big bird came & gentle flew me down off of the mountain safe & sound . I had that dream 6 times in a row .

  9. What does dreaming about birds (goldfinch specifically) that is enormous in size and is just looking at you? And then a bunch of other birds around that are also enormously sized. They aren’t attacking but just looking at you and are all around. And then a giant fish (without teeth) is nibbling on your head (not even in the water? It’s not hurting you – it almost tickles but you are kind of freaked out not knowing why it is doing this.

    1. Sounds like what the bird dictionary was saying about the caged bird with everyone standing around looking in the cage at you. There a group of people that doesn’t understand you. Or maybe the group that watching you are birds bigger than normal so maybe the birds are loved one that are free but their problems are big and you feel they rely on you so they’re starring at you and the fish is the nagging problem
