Lying at the southern end of the Peak District, Ashbourne is a perfect example of an English market town – market place with stalls, eccentric street plan, narrow cobbled alleys, coaching inns and almshouses. In its heyday in the 18th-century, the town was a fashionable social centre, and many fine Georgian buildings remain from this period.
