Owned by Severn-Trent Water, Carsington Water is a large reservoir on the edge of the Peak District surrounded by wildflower meadows, ancient hedgerows, native woodlands, ponds, muddy shorelines, reedbeds, and islands.
Since its construction, over 215 species of birds and 30 species of mammals have been recorded at the site which takes its water from the River Derwent. The northern end of is a wildlife zone while the rest of the reservoir is used for leisure activities.
In spring, watch ducklings as they take their first swim, and keep an eye out for kingfishers catching fish for their young, while in the summer look up to see buzzards soaring across the reservoir.
Autumn marks the return of wintering waders and waterfowl including lapwings, snipes, dunlins, little grebes, great crested grebes, tufted ducks, and scaups. Birds, such as the great northern diver, which would usually be found on the coast, can often be spotted at the reservoir in winter.
There are plenty of marked trails around the Carsington Water offering you fantastic views across the water without disturbing the precious ecosystem. You’ll also find 4 bird hides as well as places to stop for a picnic.
The visitor centre is run by Severn-Trent, which holds year-round exhibitions and family-friendly events, and where you will find information about the reservoir’s wildlife and lists of the latest bird sightings.
RSPB volunteers are on hand in the shop located in the visitor centre to share bird watching tips. You can also hire binoculars for the day to help you get a better view.
As well as bird watching, there are plenty of other things to do at Carsington Water including climbing, cycling, horse-riding, fishing, sailing, rowing, canoeing, windsurfing, and kayaking, while children will enjoy the adventure playground.
Dogs are welome at Carsington Water, but are not allowed in the restaurant and cafes.
Please note, although entrance to Carsington Water is free, there is a charge for the car park including for RSPB members.
