British Birds A Pocket Guide

Happy New Year from the team at Bird Spot HQ!

It’s the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this month, the UK’s biggest wildlife survey. And to celebrate we’re giving one lucky Bird Spotter the chance to win a copy of British Birds: A Pocket Guide.

Part of the brilliant WILDGuides series, this little book is packed full of hundreds of stunning photographs and detailed descriptions to help you identify not only the birds in your garden but also those found further afield.

To enter all you need to do is tell us which is the best bird that has ever visited your garden. Enter your answers in the comments below, and we’ll pick a winner at random using the wonderful wheel of names.

The competition closes at 11:59 pm on the 8th January 2020 and you can see the full competition Ts&Cs here.

Good luck!

  1. i love all the birds that come in my garden ,they brighten the winter up a bit , you could set your watch by their timely visits, the robin is always
the last one to leave at about dusk.

  2. The woodpecker (I think greater spotted) visits our nut feeder. A youngster with red head also visited as well as a parent with black head. We have also had a pair of green wooodpeckers, they came to drink from the bird bath during the heatwave days last year.

  3. Great Spotted Woodpecker. It visited twice & spent a long time on the feeder each time AND I got a photo!

  4. A friendly robin who sits on our fence outside the back door and sings to us. My husband whistles to him and he answers back. He always puts us in a good mood.

    1. I’ve had a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker visit my garden for the first time this year. As for other birds, I love the Goldfinches and I’ve had 14 on my feeders at one time.

  5. Its a wood pigeon that has hit his wing at some point as it hangs lower than the other , the kids have called him Wonky wing comes most days to the bird table

  6. The biggest surprise was when our garden was visited by a pheasant because we are not near to any fields or woods. A common bird but not on my garden!

  7. I live in Hong Kong. I don’t have a private garden 🙁 One time a cheeky Yellow-crested Cockatoo flew onto my rooftop though. That was a fun couple of minutes.
