Happy New Year from the team at Bird Spot HQ!

It’s the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this month, the UK’s biggest wildlife survey. And to celebrate we’re giving one lucky Bird Spotter the chance to win a copy of British Birds: A Pocket Guide.

Part of the brilliant WILDGuides series, this little book is packed full of hundreds of stunning photographs and detailed descriptions to help you identify not only the birds in your garden but also those found further afield.

To enter all you need to do is tell us which is the best bird that has ever visited your garden. Enter your answers in the comments below, and we’ll pick a winner at random using the wonderful wheel of names.

The competition closes at 11:59 pm on the 8th January 2020 and you can see the full competition Ts&Cs here.

  1. We had a starlings murmuration one year and it was Amazing we used to sit in the garden watching them for hours!!!

  2. We were very excited to get a redwing drinking from our pond this year. It’s the first time I’ve seen one. We’ve had a sparrowhawk perch on our fence in the past too, they are incredibly beautiful and impressive.

  3. Couldn’t believe my eyes (and my ears) when I saw a beautiful fluffy Wren happily singing away in one of the bushes outside our house 🙂 They are such a rare sight in my part of Essex.
Until I managed to get my mobile ready, it flew away…

  4. Would love a smaller bird book to keep in my car, so if we see something can identify it there n then..

  5. We are lucky enough to live on an estuary so we have had some beautiful visitors, including Bullfinches, coalfinches, sparrowhawks, linnets and redwings

  6. Sparrows seem to be few these days we used to se large groups now we’re lucky to see one, so despite all the other birds we see in the garden it’s nice to see the old common sparrow!

  7. Gold finches, chaffinch, blue tits, great tits, long tailed tits and several others but my favourite is the great spotted woodpecker that visits every day.

  8. The humble Starling so underrated but oh so beautiful when enjoying a feed or bath in our garden, love to watch them squabble and also how they feed their young even though some of the young ones seem bigger than their parents.

  9. moving to the country .and lying in bed at night listening to the owls instead of having to listen to traffic . wonderful.

  10. Sparrowhawk. Occasional visitor. Once sat in the middle of the lawn for several minutes with a young sparrow in its claws just glaring at us. Completely in control. Wonderful to see. Shame about the deaths of other visitors (sorry sparrows, blue tits et al)!
