British Birds A Pocket Guide

Happy New Year from the team at Bird Spot HQ!

It’s the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this month, the UK’s biggest wildlife survey. And to celebrate we’re giving one lucky Bird Spotter the chance to win a copy of British Birds: A Pocket Guide.

Part of the brilliant WILDGuides series, this little book is packed full of hundreds of stunning photographs and detailed descriptions to help you identify not only the birds in your garden but also those found further afield.

To enter all you need to do is tell us which is the best bird that has ever visited your garden. Enter your answers in the comments below, and we’ll pick a winner at random using the wonderful wheel of names.

The competition closes at 11:59 pm on the 8th January 2020 and you can see the full competition Ts&Cs here.

Good luck!

  1. Not so many in our garden, but some lovely ones in my neigbours garden which we can see from a lounge. My favourite was the gold finches.

  2. We had a pair of gold crest’s make a nest in the ivy on a trellis but my husband parked his car next to it , it had dark windows, then we saw
the little birds attacking the windows, they thought they had intruders
but it was only their reflections, so he moved the car further away.

  3. I have all sorts of birds visiting my feeding station all day long, but my favourites are a Greater Spotted Woodpecker and a pair of pretty collared doves. And a cute little goldcrest.

    1. Lots of lovely birds but one morning I was amazed to find a Goshawk in my garden, my husband didn’t believe me he thought it was a Sparrowhawk but when we looked it up it definitely was. Quite spectacular, especially when it flew away!

  4. Sparrow Hawk. Heard a terrible noise in the garden lots of birds squawking and other animal noise, looked out the window to see the Sparrow Hawk taking off with a mouse .

  5. We get a little firecrest that taps on our kitchen window as if trying to get in, we have been told that it can probably see its reflection.

  6. I had a red kite in my garden, my cats had bought a rabbit which sadly passed and the red kite came straight down and had it! Just by chance I was looking out the window!

  7. A pair of peregrine falcons. The female trying to kill the small birds on my bird feeder one day and the following day the larger male who killed a collared dove and a pigeon. Amazing birds.
