British Birds A Pocket Guide

Happy New Year from the team at Bird Spot HQ!

It’s the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this month, the UK’s biggest wildlife survey. And to celebrate we’re giving one lucky Bird Spotter the chance to win a copy of British Birds: A Pocket Guide.

Part of the brilliant WILDGuides series, this little book is packed full of hundreds of stunning photographs and detailed descriptions to help you identify not only the birds in your garden but also those found further afield.

To enter all you need to do is tell us which is the best bird that has ever visited your garden. Enter your answers in the comments below, and we’ll pick a winner at random using the wonderful wheel of names.

The competition closes at 11:59 pm on the 8th January 2020 and you can see the full competition Ts&Cs here.

Good luck!

  1. For the first time we have got Jays visiting our garden and they have made a nest in the woods at the top of our garden.

  2. Hoopoe in November 2018. At the time it was the only one recorded in the UK. Lots of birdwatchers descended on our village!

  3. All the birds are welcome in my garden, many hours are spent with my binoculars trying to identify and log in my bird journal along with my grand daughter who likes the Jackdaw best.

  4. A jay bird, I was singing to a cd/ a dance tune bird of pray lyrics and JUST at that point I looked out of the window and there it was staring at me. What an amazing coincidence and also a rare special moment. I’ll never forget that as long as I live, I felt like I’d hit some kind of jackpot.

  5. My wife and I were priviledged to witness a sparrow hawk fly into our back garden. Beautiful in it’s markings it cut an imposing figure when perched on my garden fence!

  6. A kestrel who left his half eaten pigeon which he came back for the next day, he hid it by the shed. We are in the suburbs of Manchester which is why I was so excited to see a kestrel in the garden.

  7. A cheerful flock of long tailed tits that regularly visit my feeding station. Beautiful to see and hear these lovely excitable birds.
