Happy New Year from the team at Bird Spot HQ!
It’s the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this month, the UK’s biggest wildlife survey. And to celebrate we’re giving one lucky Bird Spotter the chance to win a copy of British Birds: A Pocket Guide.
Part of the brilliant WILDGuides series, this little book is packed full of hundreds of stunning photographs and detailed descriptions to help you identify not only the birds in your garden but also those found further afield.
To enter all you need to do is tell us which is the best bird that has ever visited your garden. Enter your answers in the comments below, and we’ll pick a winner at random using the wonderful wheel of names.
The competition closes at 11:59 pm on the 8th January 2020 and you can see the full competition Ts&Cs here.
Good luck!
This competition is now closed. Congratulations to Mrs D McCandless – we hope you enjoy the book.
Don’t worry if you weren’t able to enter – check back soon for another chance to win.

All birds are beautiful that enter our garden. But we love watching the woodpecker that visits our bird feeder for some peanuts. We also get occasional visits from pheasants across the field which are beautiful birds.
A wren made his nest in the little bird house on my balcony
It was quite an undertaking but sadly he never returned with a wife in tow
Female sparrowhawk, she was beautiful.
Female Blackcap on snowy winters day. Making full use of the bird table.
My first long tailed tit ,had been watching for ages then the penny dropped that it was different, when you get a garden full of sparrows and starlings .
Kestrel so beautifully marked
I make a point of feeding the birds ever morning, and feel im helping with the population of Sparrows. Either be House or Dunnock. But i get roughly 35 visiting a day in winter which can double in summer. but it doesnt matter, they always get fed.
I love all the beautiful and colourful songbirds that visit our garden every day, they fascinate me, I love watching them and have so many different species visiting at the same time, my favourite bird that visits me is my little Robin, he often comes and perches on my backdoor step and front door step next to me for his bird seed.
Long tailed tits, they are like a gang! Come in like a mini army all together and leave together ❤️
We were lucky enough to have a Brambling visit last year. We had wanted to see one for ages so it was a real treat when we spotted this one in our Bromley apple tree one morning.
Goldfinches lots of them, I love them brilliant looking birds
A Scarlet Headed Blackbird!! I’m not sure how it got in the garden. I am in south east London! I was sitting in the garden with my Mum and it just flew into the Jasmine stayed for a minute and flew off. We just both looked at each other in awe! It’s a wonderful memory and reminds me of my Mum who died just 2 years ago.
Bullfinch
Greater Spotted Woodpecker. Scares off the smaller birds and then legs it himself when the magpies come down!
The blackbird couple who nest in my hedge…..and eat my strawberries, blueberries and gooseberries.
A Sparrow Hawk.
Perched for some time on a fence post a metre away not at all bothered by my presence though the usual garden visitors of Tits, Dunnocks, Robins, Wrens etc were conspicuous by their absence!
We get a large variety of birds I love the robins and wrens but I was surprised when a woodpecker landed on my feeder.
Green woodpecker
Two Kingfishers flew into my window a few years ago. I managed to get a quick close up look at them before they both recovered and flew away.
I’ve had many different birds in my garden but the BEST ones are our cheeky little sparrows who provide hours of entertainment
