A bird flying into your home can be an unsettling experience. Even if you don’t usually suffer from ornithophobia – a fear of birds – having one flapping around in a confined space, desperately trying to escape, can be nerve-wracking.
For many, this experience comes with an extra layer of anxiety, as the event is steeped in spiritual meanings and superstitions, not all of which are positive.
One of the most persistent superstitions is that a bird entering your house foretells bad luck or even an impending death. This belief is especially common in Celtic traditions, where black birds like crows and ravens are often linked to sickness and mortality. The larger and more disruptive the bird, the more ominous the event seems, as their size and frantic movements can cause damage, adding to the unease.
A particularly specific superstition warns that if a bird flies into a house, circles a room, and lands on the back of a chair, the person who usually sits in that chair is next to face the grim reaper, while in Ireland, the presence of a wild bird inside the home is said to signify the illness or death of a woman in the family. However, there’s no statistical evidence to support either of these claims.
Even a bird attempting to enter your home or tapping on a window can be interpreted as a warning of doom. For some, the mere sight of a bird colliding with a window is seen as a sign of imminent family loss. While this may be true for the unfortunate bird itself, it’s worth questioning whether these superstitions hold any real merit.
Because of these beliefs, some people go to great lengths to avoid anything bird-related in their homes. They may refuse to keep pet birds, hang paintings or decorations featuring birds, or even bring feathers into their living spaces, particularly peacock feathers, which are often thought to bring bad luck.
Killing a bird that enters your house is also considered taboo. Beyond being against the law in many countries, harming a bird could lead to tangible bad luck in the form of legal trouble or fines.
Even celebrities haven’t escaped these superstitions. Lucille Ball, for example, had a well-documented fear of birds, and refused to stay in hotels that displayed pictures of birds. She reportedly tore down some expensive Japanese silk wallpaper from her Beverly Hills home after noticing bird motifs in the design. Ball traced her phobia back to childhood when, shortly after her father’s death, a bird flew into her family home and became trapped.
Superstitions surrounding birds don’t stop at your home’s interior. Some believe that herons or bitterns simply flying over your house can bring bad luck. And of course, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds has forever linked the sight of gathering birds with ominous outcomes.
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. In many cultures, a bird entering your home is seen as a positive omen, particularly if the bird is white or brightly coloured. These birds are often associated with good luck, opportunities, protection, or harmony.
Doves and pigeons, symbols of peace worldwide, are especially welcome. And if one happens to relieve itself on you during its panicked escape, it’s considered doubly lucky.
In some traditions, birds are seen as messengers. A bird flying into your house might be trying to deliver a message, though deciphering whether it’s good or bad is up to your interpretation.
If a bird appears restless inside your home but doesn’t seem eager to leave, some believe it signifies the presence of a spirit. This isn’t always a negative sign; the spirit could be there to guide you through a challenging time.
Birds are also linked to love and romance. In Indonesia, for example, a sparrow flying into a house is thought to predict a family member’s upcoming marriage or the birth of a baby. A bird attempting to build a nest in your home is viewed as a sign of new life and prosperity.
Like many superstitions, these ideas likely stem from our ancestors’ attempts to make sense of the world before the advent of modern science. Animals’ behaviours, particularly those that crossed the boundary between the wild and the domestic, were often imbued with meaning.
Birds, with their freedom to traverse air, land, and water, were seen as particularly significant. Their presence inside a home, a space symbolically separate from nature, was interpreted as an omen, for better or worse.
Today, most of us recognise that superstitions are irrational. Still, it’s not uncommon for even the most logical among us to hold onto certain beliefs. While a bird flying into your house is almost certainly bad luck for the bird itself, any misfortune that follows is likely coincidental. Remember, correlation does not imply causation.

So how many of you know someone that had a bird fly into the house and nothing happened. Then felt compelled to post on a web forum that nothing happened?
Confirmation bias. You’re only as doomed as you want to be.
I found a bird in my house 2 days ago . It was trying to get out and kept banging itself against my window . I think it flew in through the chimney .
I released it outside and it flew away unharmed.
Nothing has happened besides my husband buying me a new car 2days later .
Amen! If u believe in Jesus then just think if Jeus is trying to “catch your attention” listen my brother n sisters “birds come from god placing them their “ he also feeds them just like he feeds us! So just think about it! It’s just a bird!!! I love them !!!
Amen , Now i have had a bird fly around my house and when i opened the window it flew right out ! Then in that same wk my granny and friend passed away. Today my neighbor knock on my door and he said it was a bird( a sparrow) in the hallway .I saw it ! All I know I didn’t want it to come in my apt cause its too small to be trying to catch a bird ! Now my Auntie ‘s birthday is today. Now was her spirit trying to visit me on her birthday?By being by/ close to my door…
That’s what I was thinking as well ♀️
My crows tap on the windows when it’s time to get fed. I hadxa bird fly into the house and calmly guided it back to where it bould fly out. No need to panic. It’s not a monster, just a bird that doesn’t want to be there.
It kept hitting window to the blood was smeared all over the window not cool at all
I’ve had experience dealing with birds..When I was younger we had a black bird trying to get in through a window for 2 days that bird wouldn’t leave it would peck on the window the fly back to the tree, then come back to the window pecking some more, A few days after my brother was in a terrible accident he didn’t die but only bc God allowed him to live he was 12 yrs old at the time. Then yr pass and a bird flew in my sister house a few days later her ex husband died of a massive heart attack, I’ve Noticed when a bird flys in your house it’s like a warning to a family member/ close friends but when a bird actually tries to get into your house by constantly pecking at your window/doors it’s a very close family member living in that house or someone your really close to.i find it strange..idk why God allows such things maybe it’s wlhis was trying to change ppl I’m not sure but it’s scares me when any bird comes to a winter door or inside..
Oh M G… Just last 2 days ago, when we reached our building and approached the door, our roommates were about to go inside the accommodation however, there was this small bird, we think it was a parrotlet (color white) flew to his bag, and the bird was flying around but not so high, and actually flew at my back. then, my boyfriend catch it and decided to just buy a cage and food for it, and now the bird is with us in the room. like we pet it. what should we do now? after I read these articles and comments. I’m kinda afraid now.
You’re keeping a wild bird in a cage? That’s awful – release it back where it came from. It’s not a toy.
Hahaha awesome ????
Train it to steal money and let it go
Please release the bird. Would you like to be in a cage too?
Sounds he just needed a home. White is a good omen if they are true.

Did anything happen?
Me too! I’m freaking out and praying really hard that no one in my family is going to die. I was always told if a bird flies into your house it means someone is going to die. A baby bird flew in our house today.
Update: who died?
My wife died and the night of her funeral a bird flew into my house (it was dark) the cat caught it I shouted drop it and it did (how often does that happen?) it then flew upstairs and settled on the rafters my vaulted ceiling of my bedroom, I opened the french doors to let it out but it stayed sitting in the rafters, I left the doors open to allow the bird out and awoke several times in the night but it was still there, at the time I was very stressed with a tight feeling in my chest, watching out for the bird took my concentration off the days events. Several hours after sunlight when I awoke and ready to get up the bird flew out. It was as though it was seeing me through the night.
I love that you found the positive in that and I believe you are right ♥️
I burned the house down and moved to okinawa Japan now Notepad burn and go
My wife went into hospital 0400 24.12.22.i went to the hospital.at 1430 came home to get a wash and shave.passing the 8ft wide sitting room window saw a bird frantically flying about, the curtains were drawn.the bird flew down in front of me and laid on its side on the window sill.picked it up was warm to the touch and released it.no windows or doors open in the house, the bird about the size of a sparrow had black head, back and wings with complete white front.my Fife died at 6pm that evening
???? my sincere condolences. Wishing you peace and comfort.
That was a sad face emoji, not question marks. My apologies, that reads very strange otherwise. We had an incident with a sparrow getting into the house and my mother died about a month later. When I saw this frantic bird flapping back and forth between the kitchen and living room, bracing myself all I could think about was mom.
Hello,
My husband passed away this December 2022. The day he passed I was in my home talking with my daughter in law when she said..,, look there’s a bird walking around on the floor! My back door was open, it is winter here, I’ve had birds in the house before as I like my doors open. Always was able to rescue them without any harm and release them. But I have never seen one strutting around on the floor. My little dog then saw the bird and of course thought it would be a tasty appetizer. The bird then flew to the windows and finally out the back door again. I also had had a sign from my two little dogs, earlier that morning (3:am) they woke me up and wanted me to hold them., both standing in bedroom doorway and willing me to wake up. I thought they wanted to go pee, so got up and opened back door. But no, they didn’t want to go out but for me to hold and cuddle them. I am sure this was the time my husband passed. Am I next?! I want to stay alive to take care of my dogs. They were/are so precious to us. They are 11 but full of life and energy. Almost like pups. Any help or advice I would be so grateful for. Blessings to all.
I had a bird fly into my porch and two weeks later my brother died. Then 3 months later, two more birds got into my upstairs bedroom when I opened a screen door. I was frantic to get them out. I chased them with a broom, opened all the windows, did everything I could to get the two of them out.
Finally one bird flew out of the house. The second one stayed until the next day before leaving.
A month later my Mom died unexpectedly. My Dad died 4 months later.
Birds are bad omens. If a bird flies into your house, someone will die.
I believe your correct. Never in my entire time living in the house that i do now has a bird flown into the until my father had 2 strokes and died. A week or so ago i bird flew into our backroom. As i didn’t know at that time but found out shortly after that a friend had passed away. I also had a visit from a hummingbird that flew upstairs to my moms room. Very strange that ive had many encounters with birds and death has either occurred or is about to.
Same happened to me in 2016 a bird flew into my house and two weeks later my brother in law died .
I came back home today to see a blackbird in the house no window are doors open and a bottle of holy water on the floor which would be up over my front door. I left the bird out the window,, I literally cried I put holy water all over my house I’m worried now .
A little bird flew into my house today and it was almost unlucky for the bird. My cat chased it around the house, but luckily, I was able to grab my husband’s glove and corner it. I caught it and put it outside.
A bird flew straight at my face and into my back door, I have no idea where in the house it went, I looked everywhere, I can’t find it, but I have the worst feeling of doom, idk if its paranoia, but I’m worried about someone.
Did anything bad happen?
Yesterday morning my grandson who lives in the same house as me, woke up to a bird flying around his room. Today my good friend who also lives with us passed away. Was the bird warning us of what was coming?????
Yes i believe it was when my son died the morning after his body came home a little bird flew in my door circled the coffin and room when heading back out it landed on the window ledge i picked it up in both hands and kissed its head and let it go i believe it was my son saying goodbye
A robin came knocking at our window the day before our dad died. Now it visits us nearly every day and we think its him coming back to say hello.
Yesterday I moved into a new house and opened a window and a bird flew in straight away. Now Im scared the house is not a good place. It went out after I left it in the room but what else can I do?
The definition is clear, if its a black little bird then its a death or sickness sign. I do believed on these, it happened to my neighbors before meanwhile the black crow bird always visit her twice in a row when she was so ill. And her daughter saw it the day she pronounced dead. Its scary yet i bet black birds are bad omens! Be aware and pray
What a touching story ?
I woke up to a bird in my living Room last Saturday morning I woke up again a week later on a Saturday as well to another bird in another bedroom in my home. This can’t be a good sign ? Any ideas ?
It means you have a hole in your roof
Too funny
I just accidentally killed the bird I was trying to free from my home…Oh No!!!… I immediately started praying.
Every morning a little after 5 I have birds flying into my kitchen they leave after a few minutes it looks like a brown bird what does this mean
IDK where I are but Google “carolina wren”. I have same experience with these guys in east coast usa. I think it means they like me.
A black starling recently flew into my bedroom through a teeny slit in the screen window. September 12th is when it happened, September 13th, my life started falling apart!! In no uncertain terms…..if it symbolized bad luck, then I believe it to be 100000000% true. I have never experienced such a run of bad luck in my life. Hoping that it’s over now and that it never happens again! Although next time, I will be prepared!
It’s not the bird that causes the bad luck. Birds are messengers. It seems like the bird bringing a warning of someone sending negative energy, so that you cleanse your energy.
How does one do that?
Noticed a movement out of the corner of my eye in the bathroom, suddenly there’s a small bird glying from my bedroom into the kitchen, which he circled overhead; by then two doors were open, we believe it is gone, but no one saw it come into the house and no one saw it fly out. This is the 3rd bird in 10 years.
Ok last year a young bird flew in our home and we were able to divert it back outside safely. Roughly 6/7 weeks later my father passed away.
Today (Halloween Morning) my 11 year old son’s cat (1st time ever) brought a bird in this home (we moved in with my mom), thankfully it was able to escape his mouth flew around and when trying to fly outta the window my daughter was able me to open it snd it flew in a tree.
Any ideas? What May occur?
Stacy, following up on your post from October. Has there been an event since this occurrence?
Any updates ?? Did anything good come to your family?
Came home & I heard my 24yr.old daughter scream as if she saw the devil but it was a bride flying in the house it would go to living room window & then to the kitchen & back & forth after a good 15 min or so it finally flew out the door! So if any one knows the meaning please tell me thanks
I don’t know what it means, but I’d be screaming too if a bride flew around in my house ?
LOL
Tonight I opened my kitchen door which goes into the garage and a small blue colored bird flew into my bedroom (probably because the door closed in that direction). I closed the door and got a blanket to cover and catch it. It flew back and forth for several minutes before it perched on the blinds and I was able to grab it gently in the blanket and put it back out into the garage. I’m praying it was just a misguided bird. It wasn’t hurt and flew off as soon as I released it.
