An appealing little market town with a pleasant rural vibe and a wide range of retail options, dining establishments, and watering holes (not to mention regular farmer’s markets). The town square features a market hall from the 17th century and a newer recreation centre with a pool. Bakewell is conveniently located inside the Peak District National Park, making it a popular starting point for excursions into the park’s stunning surroundings. Alton Towers, Britain’s best theme park, is only a short drive away, and both the rugged Dark Peak and the softer limestone White Peak are within easy reach. Some of the more notable landmarks in the area include Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, and Hardwick Hall, as well as the nearby caverns in Castleton and Little John’s burial place in Hathersage. The stunning Edwardian Opera House in Buxton was designed by Frank Matcham, who also created the London Palladium.
