The historic old port of Carsethorn is positioned on the coast line overlooking the Solway Firth, with views across the water to the Cumbrian Hills, thirteen miles from the town of Dumfries. The remains of the old pier can still be seen at low tide, plus in times gone by many people left Scotland from Carsethorn to start a new life in America. Carsethorn has a pub, whilst six miles away is the village of New Abbey, which is dominated by the peak of Criffel and offers the ruins of Sweetheart Abbey, a watermill, a shop, a coffee shop and two hotels. The market town and former royal burgh of Dumfries is close by, with its many museums, restaurants, pubs and shops, plus the Galloway Hills and forests are the perfect place for walks, cycle rides and fishing. Carsethorn is an excellent base for exploring this part of Scotland.
