A charming small market town with a delightful rural feel that offers a nice assortment of stores, eateries, and bars in addition to regional farmers’ markets. The town’s historic market hall dates to the 17th century, and a contemporary recreation facility with a pool is close by. In the Peak District National Park, Bakewell is conveniently located for visiting this stunning area. Within reasonable driving distance is Britain’s top theme park, Alton Towers, as well as the rocky Dark Peak and the softer limestone White Peak. There are several historic homes to visit, including Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, and Hardwick Hall, to name just a few. It’s also worthwhile to see Little John’s burial site in Hathersage and the amazing caverns in neighbouring Castleton. Visit the spectacular Edwardian Opera House in Buxton, which was created by Frank Matcham, who also created the London Palladium.
