An appealing little market town with a charming rural atmosphere and a good selection of shops, restaurants, and pubs, as well as local farmers’ markets. In the town centre, there is an old 17th-century market hall and a modern leisure centre with a swimming pool. Bakewell is located within the Peak District National Park and is an excellent starting point for exploring this stunning area. Alton Towers, Britain’s premier theme park, is only a short drive away, and both the rugged Dark Peak and the softer limestone White Peak are easily accessible. There are numerous stately homes to visit, including Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, and Hardwick Hall, to name a few, as well as the impressive caverns in nearby Castleton and Little John’s burial place in Hathersage. Visit the impressive Edwardian Opera House in Buxton, designed by Frank Matcham, who also designed the London Palladium.
