About

Located on the site of the former Black Loch and within walking distance of Dumfries, Fountainbleau Ladypark is a small nature reserve managed by the Scottish Wildlife Trust.

Despite being surrounded by a housing development, the reserve offers plenty of opportunities to observe a wide variety of birds. The low-lying wet birchwood is a haven for woodland species such as woodpeckers, willow tits, treecreepers, siskins, lesser redpolls, and chaffinches. Keep an eye out for a tiny wren darting through the undergrowth.

In winter, look out for fieldfares, redwings, bramblings, bullfinches, and flocks of long-tailed tits, and listen for the robin’s sweet song, which rings out even in the cold months. During irruptions, waxwings may also visit, feasting on the reserve’s berries.

In summer, the chalk grasslands come alive with yellowhammers, tree sparrows, and chiffchaffs, while buzzards and kestrels can often be seen soaring in the skies above.

The wetlands are home to numerous waterfowl, including pink-footed geese, teals, Canada geese, wigeons, oystercatchers, gadwalls, and reed buntings, which are often spotted in the surrounding vegetation. You might also hear the distinctive call of a water rail, even if it remains hidden from view.

Access to the reserve is via the cycle path that runs between the high school and the Scottish Water building. Follow the path to the metal fence, then skirt around the left side of the fencing and carefully cross the road to the wooden bridge and reserve entrance gate. Be aware that wet ground conditions can limit accessibility. Deep drainage ditches and soft ground are common throughout the reserve, so proceed with caution.

Please note, dogs are welcome on the reserve, but must be kept under effective control.
