Happy New Year from the team at Bird Spot HQ!
It’s the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this month, the UK’s biggest wildlife survey. And to celebrate we’re giving one lucky Bird Spotter the chance to win a copy of British Birds: A Pocket Guide.
Part of the brilliant WILDGuides series, this little book is packed full of hundreds of stunning photographs and detailed descriptions to help you identify not only the birds in your garden but also those found further afield.
To enter all you need to do is tell us which is the best bird that has ever visited your garden. Enter your answers in the comments below, and we’ll pick a winner at random using the wonderful wheel of names.

A barn owl is a regular visitor to our big oak tree.
A pheasant we were over the moon to be able to see it so closely.
A beautiful tree creeper, heading up the trees at the back of my garden.
Woodpeckers occasionally visit our garden, but very rarely.
A robin – they might not be the most unusual but I think they’re the best!
A flock of long tail tits last year, so pretty. Went through my apple trees looking for tasty bits, sadly not seen them since.
I’ve had a Jay in my garden. A real treat.
A great spotted woodpecker.
A gorgeous green finch!
A flock of 20 goldfinch … both quality and quantity which is a rarity.
The Robin and Blackbird who sing outside my bedroom window at 4/5 am.

A red tailed kite visited our garden when we lived in the country. We were so shocked none of us wanted to breathe in case we scared it off.
Robin. Usually a solitary bird and considered to be somewhat aggressive and territorial. I have been uplifted to see two Robins arrive in my garden both at the same time and take turns to eat the food put out for them over the last week or so.
Most exciting is a greater spotted woodpecker but also pleased to see golcrest and we now have resident rose ringed parakeets.
We’ve had loads of blue tits and robins for the last 2 months – such a joy to watch
