Happy New Year from the team at Bird Spot HQ!
It’s the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this month, the UK’s biggest wildlife survey. And to celebrate we’re giving one lucky Bird Spotter the chance to win a copy of British Birds: A Pocket Guide.
Part of the brilliant WILDGuides series, this little book is packed full of hundreds of stunning photographs and detailed descriptions to help you identify not only the birds in your garden but also those found further afield.
To enter all you need to do is tell us which is the best bird that has ever visited your garden. Enter your answers in the comments below, and we’ll pick a winner at random using the wonderful wheel of names.
The competition closes at 11:59 pm on the 8th January 2020 and you can see the full competition Ts&Cs here.
Good luck!
This competition is now closed. Congratulations to Mrs D McCandless – we hope you enjoy the book.
Don’t worry if you weren’t able to enter – check back soon for another chance to win.

A goldcrest. Seen a few times last year.
Several Fieldfares following a heavy snowfall a year or so ago.
Seeing our beautiful Robin appear makes our day, he’s definitely king of the castle and pops up all around our garden, front and rear feeding on the food we put out each day. But have to admit that seeing a small flock of Long tail-tits that seem to just pass through for a few days each Spring is very special.
I love the Long Tailed Tits – they always seem to show up as a little group, in and out like a military manouever!
A Great Spotted Woodpecker visits my window feeder, which is lovely as I live in a flat in South London.
The elusive jaybird.
I don’t have a garden but I have a bird feeder hanging outside my window and Goldfinches, Jackdaws, Sparrows, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Robins and my favourite, a Coal Tit have all come to feed!
Nuthatch for a daytime visitor and we’ve had an owl at night – could hear both the twit and the twoo but only saw one on the wall.
Male Sparrow hawk
A peregrine falcon swooped down on the fence where a squirrel was feeding, I was so lucky to be able to video it as the squirrel hissed and the peregrine didn’t quite know what to think.
What a privilege to witness that rare moment and video it
The Robin is our greatest resident garden bird, with the beautiful redbreast, the Robin can enlighten you and give you pleasure even on the most gloomiest of Winter day’s.
Wagtail, don’t see them that often so a delight when you do.

Really enjoyed the visits from the long tailed tits recently, very cute birds!

I had a pair of Garganey come and land on our pond. I got a photo of them through the window it was not very good. I opened the back door to get a better one but that just frightened them away never to be seen again.
We had some nesting blue tits in our garden for the first time last year which was pretty cool.
Got to be a marsh harrier flying at low level under our large oak tree.
Two firecrests. ??
But we also had a lovely little nuthatch over a few mornings, and a heron flew over a couple of times on Boxing Day.

Happy new year! The most gorgeous bird that I have ever seen in my garden was great tit.
