Stanborough Reedmarsh, managed by the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust in partnership with GLL and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, is a wildlife haven located within Stanborough Park, just south of Welwyn Garden City. The nature reserve is home to one of Hertfordshire’s largest reedbeds, alongside willow woodland and marsh on the banks of the River Lea.
The reedbeds provide a vital habitat for a variety of bird species. In summer, reed and sedge warblers nest, while in winter, water rails and reed buntings roost here. The River Lea itself attracts mallards, moorhens, and cormorants, and its banks are lined with plants such as water figwort, common meadow rue, and water chickweed.
Summer visitors may also spot swifts darting low over the water for a drink, while the surrounding woodland comes alive with the sounds of chiffchaffs, long-tailed tits, and great spotted woodpeckers. Overhead, birds of prey like sparrowhawks and buzzards patrol the skies, while in 2023, a rare sighting of a little bunting, a scarce visitor from Russia, was recorded at the reserve.
Several paths run through the reserve, but they are narrow and uneven, so care should be taken. Parking is available at the nearby Stanborough Lakes car park.
Please note, dogs are welcome on the reserve, but must be kept on a lead at all times.
